Berichtdefinitie (Handbibliotheek beschrijven met LibraryThing)
Om die handbibliotheek intern ook bruikbaar te maken, is het handig om [[Breng je archief en collectie(s) in kaart|een overzicht te hebben van wat je als organisatie in huis hebt]] en je collectie doorzoekbaar te maken. De courante bibliotheeksystemen of collectiebeheersystemen zijn doorgaans veel te uitgebreid, onwerkbaar en duur voor de noden van kunstenorganisaties. PACKED kampte als expertisecentrum met hetzelfde probleem en testte het online platform LibraryThing uit om de collectie te beschrijven. Dit systeem biedt een aantal interessante voordelen:
* Je kunt de metadata over je collectie online openstellen, zodat anderen ook kunnen zien wat jouw organisatie in huis heeft
* Als een werk al eens eerder door iemand werd beschreven in LibraryThing, kun je die beschrijving (inclusief toegekende tags) eenvoudig overnemen en eventueel verbeteren/uitbreiden. De gebruikers van LibraryThing zijn zowel individuen, kleine organisaties als grote bibliotheken zoals de Bibliothèque nationale de France. LibraryThing voorziet ook links naar Amazon, Google Books, WorldCat,...
* Zolang je minder dan tweehonderd werken registreert is LibraryThing volledig gratis. Voor $10 per jaar of eenmalig $25 kan je een onbeperkte hoeveelheid werken beschrijven.
* De interface is beschikbaar in verschillende talen.
* Er zijn goede online tutorials beschikbaar via het [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHdpcxqVcUR4rXciaInacPQ?reload=9 LibraryThing YouTube channel].
* Met [https://www.librarycat.org/lib/PACKED_vzw TinyCat] biedt LibraryThing je een eenvoudig online zoekportaal op je eigen collectie aan.
* LibraryThing biedt de mogelijkheid om de gegevens over je collectie te exporteren. Dat is belangrijk voor het geval dat je ooit toch een ander systeem zou willen gebruiken of wanneer LibraryThing ooit zou ophouden te bestaan. Exports naar Excel, TSV, JSON en MARC zijn mogelijk. Daarbij kun je enkele parameters instellen die bepalen welke gegevens je exporteert.

In order to ensure this reference library can be used internally, it’s useful to have an overview of what your organisation has in house (only in Dutch), and to make your collection searchable. Library or collection management systems are currently generally much too extensive, unworkable and costly for the needs of arts organisations. As a centre of expertise, PACKED faced this same problem, so it tested how useful the online platform LibraryThing was for describing its collection. This system offers a number of interesting benefits:

  • You can make the metadata for your collection available online, so anyone can see what you have in house.
  • If a piece of work has already been described in LibraryThing by someone else, you can simply copy their description (including assigned tags) and possibly improve and/or expand it. Users include individuals, small organisations and large libraries such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It also provides links to Amazon, Google Books, WorldCat, etc.
  • LibraryThing is completely free for registering up to 200 pieces of work. You can describe an unlimited number of works for $10 per year or a one-off payment of $25.
  • The interface is available in various languages.
  • There are good online tutorials available via the LibraryThing YouTube channel.
  • It uses TinyCat as a simple online search portal for your own collection.
  • LibraryThing allows you to export your own collection’s data. This is useful in case you ever want to use a different system or if LibraryThing should cease to exist. You can export to Excel, TSV, JSON and MARC. You can also set a number of parameters to determine what data you want to export.
