Knowledge about the rights that cover (parts of) your archive or collections is important if you want to reproduce, (re)use or unlock them. As (co-)author or creator of a document or object, you also have copyrights. If you want to reuse or make another author’s work available, you need to respect their copyrights. It’s also important to make clear agreements with third parties when creating new works. Carefully noting down who the rightsholders are at the moment of creation, and what rights cover items in your archive and collections, simplifies reuse at a later date.

Kennis over de rechten op (delen van) je archief of collectie is belangrijk als je het wilt reproduceren, (her)gebruiken of ontsluiten. Als (co)auteur of maker van een document of een object, bezit je ook de auteursrechten erop. Wil je een werk van iemand anders ontsluiten of hergebruiken, dan moet je die auteursrechten respecteren. Bovendien is het belangrijk om bij de creatie van nieuwe werken duidelijke afspraken te maken met derden. Als je vóór het creatieproces zorgvuldig noteert wie de rechthebbenden zijn en welke rechten er op items uit je archief en collectie rusten, wordt dat later hergebruik vergemakkelijkt.
